Social Networking |
Social networking is something that has grown tremendously in recent months, and it did not even exist a few years ago. Some business people are a bit put off by the fact that social networks started as and are mostly about personal stuff. However, the business side is growing at a tremendous pace and it cannot be ignored as a major PR and marketing media. Some people even call it "the most powerful marketing tool since probably television". This is where the face of the Internet is changing the fastest. Watch an interesting presentation by Seth Godin about social networking in the Conference and Training Center.
Even if you have a "brick and mortar" business, it is a good idea to start having a look at what social networking is and how you could use it to promote your business.
There are many social networks and some are more popular than others. Here is a list of social networks. We will be adding to this list on a regular basis.

| Read a definition of Social Networks on Wikipedia. When you subscribe to a social network, you need to contribute on a regular basis if you want it to work for you. If you subscribe to several of them, you will soon find out that contributing can become very time-consuming. However, as everything evolves on the Internet, there are tools to help you update your material by grouping postings. Some of these social networks allow you to post your own blog on your personalized page, others don't (you have to use their blogging feature separately).
For instance, the Flock browser (www.flock.com) allows you to instantly access all your social networks from the navigation bar on the left. Since it records your login and passwords, it makes your updating work easy and fast. You can also use Ping.fm (www.ping.fm) to streamline the way you send your tweets. You can then send tweets from not only your cell phone, but from an e-mail and even Skype. What this means is that you can be present on most of the social networks and make one entry that will be sent to all of them at the same time, thus maximizing your time. Read more about this in the following pages.
Twitter is one of the popular networks. The downside is that it allows only 160 character postings. However, it provides widgets that can be embedded on your Web page and you can include URLs (Web addresses) that are shortened (they are coded in a way that is short to lead you to the correct address) in order to fit into your 160 character postings. You will find a list of social networks on the next page.
IMPORTANT WARNING: Social networks have become a prime target for hackers. Read an article about such attacks on Facebook. Hacker will lead you to fraudulent Web sites to collect you login and password. To learn more on how to recognize a fraudulent Web site, watch the FREE tutorial.
